Overview
Originally developed as a UX/UI design assignment, this project has been expanded into a comprehensive case study. It showcases my design approach for a Recipe Discovery Application, emphasizing clear problem-solving, intuitive user flows, clean visual design, and well-reasoned decisions. The primary goal is to craft a seamless end-to-end experience for a single recipe workflow.
My Role as UX/UI Designer
As the sole UX/UI Designer, I took an end-to-end approach to design a mobile-first Recipe Discovery Application. A mobile platform was intentionally chosen to provide portability, allowing users to easily follow instructions while actively cooking in the kitchen. My core focus was to create a seamless journey for one complete recipe workflow. The scope of this project includes:
◆ Recipe Exploration: Allowing users to discover food recipes they are interested in.
◆ Step-by-step Cooking Guides: Providing clear, interactive, and easy-to-follow cooking instructions.
◆Grocery Planning & Shopping List Creation: nabling users to easily identify required ingredients and save them to a digital shopping list.
Design Process
To achieve this, I followed a structured, user-centered design process that guided how I analyzed requirements, explored solutions, and delivered the final output. My process is divided into four key phases:
🙋 Empathize
Persona: Joy
I began the design process by developing a clear understanding of the target audience. To anchor my design decisions, I created a primary persona: Joy, a beginner home cook who lives in a university dormitory. By understanding her daily cooking behaviors, her goals of finding beginner-friendly recipes, and her frustrations with complex instructions, I was able to design solutions that directly address her needs.
User Story
Building upon Joy's persona, I encapsulated her needs into a core User Story to keep the design highly user-centric:
"As a beginner home cook living in a dorm, I want to follow recipes step-by-step and clearly identify which ingredients I need to buy, So that I can cook confidently without confusion or missing essential items"
🎯 Define
Joy's Journey Map
To visualize Joy’s step-by-step experience on a mobile device, I created a User Journey Map. This framework illustrates how she interacts with the app across four key phases: discovering a recipe, reviewing details, adding ingredients to her cart, and following cooking instructions. It aligns the project brief with her specific goals and frustrations.
Goal: Cook a new recipe and efficiently identify missing ingredients using a mobile app.
Mapping Joy's tasks, emotional shifts, and pain points at each stage allowed me to pinpoint specific improvement opportunities. This directly guided my strategy for optimizing the overall user flow and ensuring a seamless, beginner-friendly experience.
Problem Statement
Drawing from the insights gathered in the User Journey Map, I defined a core Problem Statement to highlight the primary friction points and anchor the design direction:
"Joy, a beginner home cook, wants to explore new recipes and efficiently buy missing ingredients via her mobile phone. However, while reviewing a recipe, she struggles to differentiate between the items she needs to purchase and what she already has in her pantry. This lack of clarity causes unnecessary cognitive load, making the meal preparation process feel overwhelming rather than enjoyable."

Design Strategy & Key Principles
Translating insights from the Empathize and Define phases into actionable solutions, I established five core design principles. These pillars ensure the final UI effectively resolves the user's pain points while remaining focused on the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) scope.
Information Architecture
To establish a clear and intuitive navigation system, I mapped out the application's Information Architecture. The structure is built around the core recipe exploration flow, seamlessly integrating the grocery planning features and activity history as supportive elements. This setup ensures users can easily transition from discovering a recipe to managing their shopping list without losing context.
User Flow
Building upon the Information Architecture (IA), I mapped out a detailed User Flow to visualize Joy’s end-to-end journey. This flow illustrates her seamless progression through the app: from exploring recipes and reviewing ingredient requirements, to adding missing items to her cart (acting as a digital shopping list), and finally following the step-by-step cooking guide.
This structured path minimizes friction at key decision points, ensuring an intuitive experience that supports her ultimate goal of cooking confidently without confusion.
🖥️ High-Fidelity Prototype
Mockups and High-Fidelity Prototype
After analyzing user needs and establishing a solid structural flow, I translated these strategic insights into a polished visual design. The high-fidelity prototype brings the Recipe Discovery application to life, focusing on four core features: Recipe Discovery, Recipe Detail View, Shopping List, and Activity History.
By directly addressing the pain points identified during the research phase, this final deliverable provides a clean, intuitive, and highly accessible user experience that seamlessly bridges the gap between meal inspiration and grocery planning.
FEATURE 1
Recipe Discovery & Exploration
The user journey begins on a thoughtfully structured Home Screen designed to accommodate various browsing behaviors and help users find inspiration efficiently. The interface offers multiple intuitive discovery paths, including a prominently Featured Banner for daily recommendations, Quick-access 'Food Categories' filters, and Curated Thematic Sections.
Additionally, users can utilize the direct search function with proactive recommendations for specific cravings, and easily bookmark appealing meals using the 'Heart' feature to save them into a personalized Favorites library for quick retrieval later.
FEATURE 2
Recipe Detail View & Interactive Cooking Mode
Upon selecting a recipe, users land on the Recipe Detail View, which serves as a comprehensive hub for meal preparation. The information architecture here is intentionally structured into three highly scannable sections:
◆ Recipe Overview: A quick-glance summary featuring a hero image, title, brief description, difficulty level, cook time, and serving size to set clear expectations.
◆Pre-Measured Ingredients List: A clean, itemized breakdown of required components, strategically positioned before the instructions so users can check their pantry.
◆ Text-Based Instructions: A static list of all steps, allowing users to read through the entire cooking process before committing.
◆ Interactive Step Mode
To support users actively in the kitchen, tapping the "Start Cooking" button transitions the app into a distraction-free Interactive Step Mode where steps are presented one at a time with large visual cues (photos or videos) to ensure accuracy. A top progress bar and prominent "Previous/Next" buttons allow users to navigate at their own pace without losing context. Deliberately separating the static Recipe Detail View from this interactive experience creates a frictionless workflow, smoothly shifting the user's mindset from meal planning to active cooking and significantly reducing cognitive load when their hands are full.
FEATURE 3
Grocery Planning & Shopping List
◆ Pre-Shopping List
To seamlessly bridge meal planning and grocery shopping, users can tap 'Add to Shopping List' directly from the recipe's ingredient list. This action opens a flexible selection screen where users can manually choose individual missing items or use the 'Add All' feature for convenience. Upon confirming their selection, a success state provides clear next steps—either navigating to the active Shopping List or returning to the recipe. This ensures users maintain full control over their workflow without unnecessary friction.
◆ Active Shopping List (Management & Completion)
Once ingredients are added, users can navigate to the dedicated Shopping List page to view and manage their required items. To ensure the list remains accurate during actual grocery shopping, users can adjust quantities on the fly and check off items as they place them in their physical cart. Once all items are collected, tapping 'Mark Shopping as Done' triggers a confirmation dialog to clear the list, smoothly resetting the state for their next recipe
FEATURE 4
Activity History
To support continuous user engagement and continuity, the Activity History feature enables users to effortlessly revisit recipes they have previously interacted with. The interface utilizes segmented tabs to cleanly categorize recipes by 'All,' 'Viewed,' and 'Cooked,' allowing users to quickly filter their past culinary journeys. Additionally, a dedicated search bar empowers users to instantly locate specific recipes within their history, minimizing the friction of retrieving a previously enjoyed meal.
📱 Design System
Design System
To ensure visual consistency and build user trust, I established a clean, minimalist design system tailored for an engaging culinary experience. The visual language was intentionally designed to reduce cognitive load while making critical recipe information and cooking steps instantly recognizable.
◆ Colors
The color palette is purposefully crafted to evoke a fresh, appetizing food theme while maintaining strict UI accessibility. Fresh Green (#28AC72) drives primary buttons and active states to promote a sense of vitality, set against spacious backgrounds of Clean White and Off-White. For typography, Dark Blue ensures high contrast and readability, while Soft Red is strategically reserved for critical alerts and destructive actions.
◆ Typography : Inter
I selected Inter for its exceptional legibility on digital screens, ensuring recipe instructions and ingredient lists remain easy to read. The mobile-optimized scale (12px–18px) utilizes Regular, Medium, and SemiBold weights to establish a clear information hierarchy. Additionally, carefully defined line heights create a comfortable vertical rhythm, preventing visual clutter and reducing cognitive load during active cooking.
◆ UI Components
To ensure a cohesive, scalable, and touch-friendly interface, I developed a comprehensive library of reusable UI components. Each element was designed with a mobile-first approach, prioritizing clear visual hierarchy and generous touch targets to accommodate users who might be multitasking in the kitchen.
Key Takeaways
The Recipe Discovery application was my first venture into culinary UX. The mobile app was designed to create an end-to-end experience from grocery planning to active cooking that rooted deeply in user empathy. Here are my core takeaways:
◆ Strategic MVP Scoping: Prioritizing a digital Shopping List over a full e-commerce checkout allowed me to focus on the core user problem within the assignment's time constraints. This reinforced the UX principle that solving a primary friction point effectively is more valuable than overcomplicating the initial product with too many features.
◆ Context-Driven UX Design: Designing the Interactive Cooking Mode highlighted the importance of designing for the physical environment. By breaking instructions into single steps with large visual cues and clear typography, I was able to minimize cognitive load and accommodate users who are actively multitasking in a busy kitchen.
Future Opportunities
Due to the assignment's time constraints, certain advanced features were deferred to prioritize the MVP. However, to build a complete ecosystem for cooking and grocery shopping, here are the key opportunities for future development:
◆ E-Commerce Integration: While the current MVP successfully streamlines meal planning and ingredient tracking, a logical next phase would be integrating local grocery delivery APIs. Evolving the active shopping list into a seamless in-app checkout experience would create a truly end-to-end culinary journey for the user.
◆ Home Cook Community: Introducing a community hub where users can share their own recipes, exchange cooking tips, and troubleshoot kitchen challenges together. This feature would transform the app from a simple utility into a highly engaged platform, fostering a real sense of community among beginner home cooks.
